Regular Meeting
January 9, 2007
Members Present: Shirley McGee, Jim Sommers, Jo Mueller, Ron Olsen
Members Absent: Dotti Shay, Bill Fouks, Lee Scholder
Staff Present: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Specialist
Minutes: December minutes were approved.
Arbor Day planning/Poster Contest: The commission suggested having a hybrid or 3-wheel
electric car on display. It would also be a good idea to have information on E85 available. Jill
told the commissioners that white spruce, sugar maples and buckeyes have been ordered for the
tree sale. The commission suggested that an order form for the trees be included in the Arbor
Day ad.
2007 Work Plan: the commission decided to keep LEED in the future goals category.
Community survey questions will be added to the Jan/Feb projects. Also add organics project
discussion to February.
Approval of Annual Goals: Annual goals as listed in the Strategic Plan were approved.
Wind Energy Program: The commission wants to pursue this project. First opportunity will
be at Arbor Day. Perhaps give buttons and promotional materials to the park clean up
volunteers. A display should be set up at the event again. Program sign up challenge should
start with commission and city staff. The paper should be notified about the program.
General Discussion: A student liaison from Chaska High School is a possibility. Samantha
Meuwissen is a member of the E-Club at school and may be available to come to some of the EC
meetings. Jill will invite her to the February meeting.
Ron shared information with the commission about a solar water heater. The commission agreed
it was a good project with which to educate the public and get direct benefit. At the next
meeting, he will bring a expense/pay back sheet.
